Popular Fictional and Illustrated Books for Kids Ages 8 to 12

Request: My niece is turning 10 and I would like to give her a book that is fictional, popular, contains illustrations and of course age-appropriate.  The book doesn’t necessarily need to be a new release.  I just need some ideas please?

Recommendation: I casually asked a few kids around your niece’s age for your question and they responded with three books they like themselves.

The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane/Author Kate DiCamillo – The Newbery Medal-winning author of “The Tale of Despereaux” returns with this story about a toy rabbit named Edward Tulane. When he becomes lost, Edward takes an extraordinary journey and shows readers a true miracle (source: Borders.com).  The book received 4.5 stars from almost 300 reviewers at Amazon.com

Because of Winn-Dixie/Author Kate DiCamillo – DiCamillo’s beloved Newbery Honor book is the story of 10-year-old India Opal Buloni, who describes her first summer in the town of Naomi, Florida, and all the good things that happen to her because of her big ugly dog, Winn-Dixie (source: Borders.com).  The book received 4.5 stars from almost 800 reviewers at Amazon.com.

A Wrinkle in Time/Author Madelein L’Engle – Meg Murray, her little brother Charles Wallace, and their mother are having a midnight snack on a dark and stormy night when an unearthly stranger appears at their door. He claims to have been blown off course, and goes on to tell them that there is such a thing as a “tesseract,” which, if you didn’t know, is a wrinkle in time.Meg’s father had been experimenting with time-travel when he suddenly disappeared. Will Meg, Charles Wallace, and their friend Calvin outwit the forces of evil as they search through space for their father? (source: Borders.com).  This book received 4.5 stars from almost 1000 reviewers at Amazon.com.

I found the books above at the Independent Reader – Kids section at Borders Bookstore and Borders.com’s.  The Independent Reader – Kids section of Borders is appropriate for children between the ages of 8 to 12 years old (Source: http://www.borders.com/online/store/BGIView_mediatgmrnews).

It’s always good to give a book, the “primitive version” of internet, to kids of the computer era 🙂

I agree! It should still be encouraged until now!
